Pre-Terminated Fibre Solutions - Everything You Need To Know
As with every aspect of your network, having the most reliable and up-to-date technology allows you to achieve the best results. Pre-Terminated Fibre solutions are one such option adopted by various industries to reap the benefits of high-quality construction. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about these cables and why they remain one of the most popular options in our online store.
What are Pre-Terminated Fibre Solutions
Pre-terminated fibre solutions offer plug-and-play solutions for connections made between servers, switches, patch panels and zone distribution areas. They are a modern alternative to field-terminated cabling which is more expensive and risks poor installation. Within pre-terminated fibre solutions, there are both ruggedized copper and fibre-optic cable assemblies. And, with each one, the ends have been pre-terminated, either mechanically or in an over-moulded design.
This system allows you to install an entire network significantly quicker than conventional on-site termination or fusion splitting. They have now become the technology of choice in many data centres and across a variety of industries.
Benefits of pre-term cabling solutions
As we mentioned above, pre-terminated fibre cable solutions were introduced to meet the needs of modern businesses. It provides a host of benefits, some of which we will discuss below.
Quick installation
Some manufacturers claim to reduce installation time by up to 10% with their pre-terminated cabling solutions. And, when it comes to moving, changing or added systems within an existing setup, they are said to be up to 50% faster. Field-termination is very time consuming and labour intensive. In contrast, pre-terminated cables can be unpacked, readied and connected quickly. This reduces downtime within a business and allows you to get back to work quickly.
Reduced installation costs
With a reduced need for excessive labour, pre-terminated fibre cables are considerably less expensive to install. This works well for businesses abiding by a specified budget - especially when altering or growing a network.
No transmission-performance testing needed
In contrast to other options, pre-terminated fibre cables are transmission tested during manufacture. This is done in a sterile and secure environment. Full reports are provided with each delivery, providing peace of mind. But, on top of this, it reduces the need for transmission-performance testing on site. This means the installation team will only have to perform a smaller number of tests before and during installation, speeding up the process even more.
Reduced downtime
It’s not uncommon for data centres or businesses to need to make changes quickly, depending on several factors. These could include new business direction, growth of teams or the need for greater bandwidths. With their plug-and-play design, pre-terminated cables can be adjusted and reorganised to meet these needs. They are also ideally designed to allow systems to be disassembled quickly, should the need arise. This minimises downtime in a business, allowing processes to continue as needed.
Greater quality control
All of the connections found on pre-terminated fibre cables are manufactured and tested in controlled environments by the manufacturer. This significantly minimises the number of defects found in the design and helps to reduce the risk of signal loss during installation. For many businesses, this makes them an attractive solution to reduce the need for additional maintenance in the coming months.
More cable solutions
Pre-terminated fibre options come in a variety of styles, including ruggedised harness, MTP, crush-resistant cables etc. This allows you to choose the most suitable option for your need, with the strength, durability and quality to stand the test of time.
Bespoke pre-terminated fibre solutions
To suit the needs of different businesses across the board, our range of pre-terminated cables can be manufactured entirely bespoke. This allows you to abide by a specified budget, customise cables for specific applications. The options available include:
5 different types of pre-terminated fibre cable
We have a variety of pre-terminated multimode fibre types, including:
- OM1 - Support 10 Gigabit Ethernet and used for 100 Megabit Ethernet applications.
- OM2 - Smaller core of 50µm, supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet and commonly used for 1 Gigabit Ethernet applications.
- OM3 - Same sized core as OM2 but these are suitable for laser-based equipment. Supports 10, 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet.
- OM4 - Backwards compatible with OM3 fibres. These were developed for VCSEL laser transmission.
- OM5 - Known as WBMMF, these are backwards compatible with OM4. Same core size as OM2, OM3 and OM5.
Available connectors
Also, our range of pre-terminated fibre cables can be manufactured with the following connectors:
- (LC) Lucent Connector - Small form connector favoured for single mode.
- (SC) Subscriber Connector - Popular fibre-optic connector.
- (ST) Straight Tip Connector - Most commonly used for fibre optics in networking applications.
Additional information about pre-terminated fibre cables
As with all of the items available on the Adept Networks website, we focus on quality and reliability when it comes to our pre-terminated fibre range. Each one features a crush-proof protective shroud while has been fitted and tested in a controlled environment. We can manufacture them with the same end connectors, different connectors or with a pre-terminated connector on just one end.
The pre-terminated fibre used in our cables is an internal/external LSZH and can be directly buried, upon request. With our optical fibre flange, they are each 900µm tight-buffered, allowing for use alongside patch panels, wall boxed and optical distribution frames. This protection also minimises the risk of damage during transit and installation, further minimising downtime and speeding up the entire project.
